Wayne Mardle is among the leading voices in world darts after moving into a role with Sky Sports as a pundit and commentator. ‘Hawaii 501’ first rose through the ranks in the BDO as a player, winning the prestigious Dutch Open in 2000, before appearing in the first of five World Championship semi-finals at Lakeside a year later.

Mardle switched over to the PDC and reached three major finals, including the World Matchplay in 2003, and participated in four of the first five editions of the Premier League. Mardle was a fans’ favourite during his playing days, known for wearing Hawaiian shirts and interacting with the crowd.

He retired from the professional circuit in 2011, and is now regularly seen and heard on Sky’s coverage of the darts. In an interview with the Guardian, Mardle said his game never fully recovered following a six-month absence with the mumps during 2009. “My wife said it finished me off,” he said. “She said I lost the fight after that. My form went pretty quickly, and I just thought it would turn around. It doesn’t. You have to really work at it. Unfortunately you live and learn, and I learned that bit too late.”

These darts are made of 90% tungsten and have a Hawaii 501 hallmark etched onto the rear of the ringed barrels. ‘Hawaii 501’ is also engraved onto the silver points as another tribute to the former Premier League star.
