A Week In Darts – October 2, 2023 – Anderson & Chisnall Amongst Title Winners In Barnsley

The world’s best players were in Barnsley last week for a Players Championship triple header, whilst more silverware was handed out in Denmark with the WDF World Cup making its return after four years. Here’s a round-up of another action-packed week in the darting world…

ANDERSON, CHISNALL & NOPPERT SHARE THE TITLES

The PDC’s Players Championship series continued with a trio of events at the Barnsley Metrodome last week – in what was the last stop before the World Grand Prix.

On Wednesday, Danny Noppert doubled his title tally for 2023 with a dramatic 8-7 victory over Christian Kist in the final of Players Championship 22.

Noppert won the all-Dutch decider against Kist, a former Lakeside winner who fell just short of winning a first PDC ranking title despite not holding a tour card.

The following day saw the in-form Dave Chisnall pick up his second PDC title in the space of just five days, as he got the better of Luke Humphries 8-3 in the Players Championship 23 final.

The two players had met in the finale of the Hungarian Darts Trophy the previous weekend, with ‘Chizzy’ coming out an 8-7 victor despite a nine-dart finish and a 170 checkout from his opponent.

Chisnall averaged 103 and threw nine 180s in a high-quality rematch in Barnsley to once again outline his credentials ahead of the World Grand Prix.

And on Friday, Gary Anderson claimed his second ranking title of the season as he saw off Ryan Joyce in the final of Players Championship 24.

The two-time world champion pocketed the £12,000 top prize on a day which saw Luke Woodhouse and Michael van Gerwen both throw nine-dart legs during the tournament.

The Players Championship season resumes with a block of four events at the Barnsley Metrodome from October 18-21.

WDF WORLD CUP RETURNS IN DENMARK

After a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the WDF World Cup made its return with 49 countries in action in Esbjerg, Denmark last week.

The bi-annual tournament was first held back in London in 1977 with Leighton Rees – the first-ever BDO world champion - winning the men’s singles and the legendary pairing of Eric Bristow and John Lowe victorious in the men’s pairs.

Dutch ace Berry van Peer continued his impressive 2023 season by winning the men’s singles title. The current PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit leader beat Germany’s Frank Bruns 7-3 in Saturday’s final.

Beau Greaves also added to her growing haul of tournament wins as she claimed the gold medal for England in the women’s singles.

The reigning WDF women’s world champion got the better of her compatriot Deta Hedman 7-5 in an all-English final at the weekend.

Greaves and Hedman partnered up earlier in the week to win the women’s pairs, beating the Finnish duo of Kirsi Viinikainen and Sari Sauvola 6-1 in the final.

New Zealand’s Haupai Puha and Ben Robb were victorious in the men’s pairs, seeing off Danny Trueman and Davie Kirwan, of Scotland, 6-2 in the decider.

The five-day festival of darts concluded on Saturday evening with the two team event finals. The Netherlands sealed a 9-7 victory against England in the men’s final, whilst the Republic of Ireland edged past Wales by the same scoreline in the decider of the women’s event.

AROUND THE BOARD

The draw for the World Grand Prix took place last week with defending champion Michael van Gerwen facing Josh Rock in an exciting first-round tie in Leicester.

The prestigious double-start tournament gets under way at the Morningside Arena tonight with (Monday), with former champions James Wade and Gerwyn Price amongst the players in action.

World number one Michael Smith also gets his campaign started on the opening night when he takes on Callan Rydz, whilst the van Gerwen and Rock clash headlines Tuesday’s order of play.
